Lesson Plan on Symbolism

Here is a narrated presentation of the first outline of a lesson plan I've ever created. This is a lesson on Symbolism through the use of the short story, "The Masque of the Red Death" by Edgar Allen Poe.

  1. Courtney,

I'm sorry for the delay in getting back to you with feedback so late. I had a friend pass away this week and it has been tough finding the space to leave feedback.

Your lesson does a good job of breaking down symbolism in an accessible way. It may be good to consider adding an essential question related to symbolism where each student would come to his or her own understanding about it. For example, "How can I use symbols effectively to convey a complex idea?" This would assume that students first have to learn what a symbol is and how to recognize them in order to find an answer to that last question.

The original story would be a great way for students to practice this in a deep way. The connection to a video is great. Do you want to help them a bit by going over storyboarding or screenwriting as a part of the unit? There may be a disconnect between the story and the visuals unless students are planning to maximize visual mediums with some reflecting ahead of time. I'd suggest one or two days on either storyboarding or writing for screen as they prepare to create a video.

Once students are able to make that video and share it with the class, you'd totally be at the "R" level of SAMR and students would be at a level where they would be carrying knowledge with them for a very long time.
